THE JOURNEY

As we look around us today, world peace and happiness for all beings seem all but an unattainable distant dream. Wherever we turn we are confronted with stories of exploitation of others and of the earth natural resources, corruption, greed, murders, rapes, wars, terrorism… sadly the list goes on and on.

Undoubtedly it is time to understand what Mahatma Gandhi explained so plainly:“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”

If we really want to live in a world of peace and harmony, we must start with ourselves and change our own thoughts and behaviour patterns. The battle we have to fight is not with the world outside but within. As spiritual seeker's we must have the courage and discipline to travel the internal path that leads to our Eternal Self. Staying on the path is a constant battle; as well as the expected crossroads, bumps and potholes, we encounter many temptations and false prophets that distract us from our ultimate purpose.

Throughout the ages, the secret of 
yoga, was imparted through oral traditions only. Patanjali, an ancient Indian sage and scholar, was the first to record a road map in the form of yoga sutras. These threads reveal the safest route and detailed ten steps that culminate in the blissful state of our final destination.

The first five are Yamas (code of self-restraints or self-regulations).
These five pearls of wisdom guide our relationships with all sentient beings and guard 
us from going astray. They are ahimsa (non-violence),satya (truthfulness),asteya(honesty),  bramacharya (celibacy) merging your energy with god, which means we use our sexual energy to generate our connection with our spiritual self, aparigraha (non-possessiveness).

The second five are Niyamas (observances or positive duties).
These five jewels ask us to cultivate our mind with virtues that help us take care of our inner being and keep our inner light shining and our path illuminated. These are:
saucha(cleanliness), santosha (contentment), tapas (discipline), 
svadyaya(self-study) and ishvarapradnidhanani (surrender to the Divine).

It is vital to the success of our quest that we tightly keep hold of these jewels and strive to follow the ten guidelines with our every thought, word and action.

The Yamas teaches us to release the knots and tensions in the physical body and mind. Through the exploration of asanas (physical postures) we develop the strength, flexibility and stamina necessary. Through 
pranayama  we regulate and control the breath, where we learn various breathing techniques and practices to explore our energy body. With the combination of asanas and pranayama we can combat diseases and retain optimal health.

The next is 
pratyahara (withdrawing one attention towards silence rather than towards outwards sense experiences) this offer an expansion in self awareness where we can observe the inner working of our mind without external distractions. The next step dharana (holding steady or concentration) Confinement of the mind to one point, object or area.

Most of us will have to climb all these steps for years, through attending classes, workshops and the daily practice of our sadhana (spiritual practice) before we can even experience the next step of dhyana (meditation) is really an extension of dharna it arises when one is able to maintain a smooth uninterrupted flow of consciousness which is better defined by Swami Satyananda as when the mind has been able to transcend the knowledge of smell, sound, touch, form and taste, and at the same time, the consciousness is functioning 
around one point.

Getting on our yoga mat each and every single morning to perform our sadhana is not easy but it is certainly worth it. We must practice for the Universal Mind, even if we struggle to do it for ourselves. We are all part of this huge sea of consciousness: when we look at the ocean we cannot see the individual droplets, just the huge expanse of water: but even the tiniest drop in its own subtle way pervades the entire essence of the ocean. So we must think very carefully about what we are feeding into the sea at our end as well as remember that only through inner peace can world peace be achieved.

The last step of our journey culminates in samadhi (a joining together) without the consciousness of one's self. The highest state where there is 
complete absence of both external and internal mental modification and all that remain is awareness, the state of perfect bliss that merges with the Cosmic Consciousness. Swami Sivananda explains it as when the meditator has dissolved his personality in the sea of God, drowned and forgotten there till he becomes simply the instrument of God. When his mouth opens, it speaks God's words without effort or forethought through direct intuition and, when he raises his hand, God flows again through that to work a miracle. There remains Existence alone.
